Seth took Lettie and her friend Saysha on a point-to-point backpack in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness, spending the night at two different alpine lakes and walking out on the 3rd day. Carrying their own packs, the girls covered 13 or 14 miles, climbing over some very high mountain passes. | Lettie discovered a large railroad spike along the old Rocky Mountain railroad and sold it on eBay as a collectible. Lorraine was the lucky winner (actually, the only bidder). |
Below:This summer the Portners purchased Boulder Baked, a popular bakery on Broadway. Lettie helps with cookie dough and decorating cupcakes. |

Seth: We had a backcountry permit to backpack in the Needles district of Canyonlands. We do this trip annually in mid-October and this time Lettie wanted to bring friend Zoey. Zoey's mom and sister came too, as did Nancy. We hiked in Friday afternoon, about 3 miles, up the very beautiful Squaw Canyon. The next day we did a big loop that was about 10 miles and included some very cool and exposed high canyon walls we needed to climb and descend.

That night (Saturday) we actually just slept out on a high plateau near our camp. It was wonderful to be under the stars, which are brilliant in that part of the world, and awoke to the rising sun. We hiked back out 3 miles the last morning. It was a good trip! This was Lettie and Nancy's first time sleeping without a tent. The night sky there is one of the best in the world...so beautiful. |
